Financial Assistance

Graduate assistantships are awarded to help students support themselves while earning graduate degrees and to help the department fulfill its responsibilities in teaching and research. You can learn more about financial assistance through graduate assistantships in the Graduate School Bulletin.

Types of graduate assistantships

The Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences offers three types of assistantships:

  • Teaching
  • Research
  • UGA Graduate School

Assistantship duration

M.S. program - 3 years
Ph.D. program - 5 years

Assistantships are contingent upon the availability of funds.

University Graduate School

Competition for UGA Graduate School is administered by the Graduate School under rules published in the Graduate School Bulletin and is at the recommendation of the department.

Stipend Requirements

The current departmental stipend, for which the College of Pharmacy requires 16 hours per week of service, is based on a 12-month appointment. If the teaching load does not occupy 16 hours per week, a graduate student may be assigned to a faculty member who will provide a work assignment so that the student's weekly service totals 16 hours. University approved holidays are observed, but graduate assistants do not accrue annual leave.

Graduate stipends will not continue after completion of the graduate program.

Living and Housing Costs

The University offers Family and Graduate Housing at a minimal cost to married students, and single students may stay in dormitories. These two options are the most economical. However, housing at all economic levels exists in Athens, and a student with a TA may live comfortably off campus. More detailed information is available from the Department of University Housing Office at http://www.uga.edu/~housing.

Medical Insurance

The University provides subsidized health insurance to all graduate students. The current subsidy is approximately 40% of the cost of the plan. For details of the health insurance plan please go to the University Health Center website at http://www.uhs.uga.edu.
